How to Replace the Plastic Safety Shield on your United Guillotine Trimmer

At United, we make our products affordable, durable, and accurate, but every now and then, parts might need replacing. The safety shield on the T14P and T18P is no exception. Due to the design of a guillotine trimmer, a safety shield makes it much safer to operate. The shield itself stands straight up, perpendicular to the flat guillotine trimmer which can make it prone to taking a few hits here and there. Because of this, the shield is made of a heavy duty plastic that can flex and reduce the chances of damage, but it’s not indestructible. If your safety shield happens to break, we’ve got you covered! What You’ll Need

The job is straightforward, the only things you’ll need is a Phillips-head screwdriver, the new safety shield, and the two screws holding the current safety shield in place.

Replacement Process

Locate the two screws holding the plastic safety shield down onto the paper clamp. Make a mental note, or even take a picture, as to how the shield is positioned, then remove these two screws with the Phillips-head screwdriver. Set the screws aside to secure the new shield.

Now reverse the process and place the new shield onto the metal paper clamp, aligning the holes in the shield with the holes on the clamp. Hand tighten the screws back in place to hold the shield, then finish tightening with the screwdriver. Now that the shield is secured in place, slowly raise the blade up and make sure it opens smoothly and does not catch anywhere on the shield. If the blade does catch, do not force open the blade, simply lower it back down. Make sure the shield is properly aligned and installed, and compare to the shield you just took off. A few final suggestions for keeping the safety shield safe and out of harm’s way.

• When transporting the guillotine trimmer, lock the blade in place and remove the safety shield. With only two screws to remove, this will only take a few minutes to do, and may save the shield. Keep the screws in a safe place and replace the shield before making any cuts.
• Be sure to keep the trimmer on a secure, sturdy surface. If the trimmer falls, the shield will be the most likely part to break.
• If you’re moving the trimmer be sure to carry with both hands, and always store it in a safe place without stacking anything on top of it.
